Kentucky, 2016, Part One

July 19, 2016

We are back with the Williamston, Michigan, Free Methodist Church to help out our friends at Oakdale Christian Academy in Jackson , Kentucky. The school is described in their website “http://www.oakdalechristian.org” as:

Oakdale Christian Academy seeks to impact student lives through a college-preparatory education, a nurturing boarding program, and the life-changing knowledge of Jesus Christ.  Rigorous college-preparatory curriculum is key to student achievement, and includes strong components in the humanities, history, mathematics and the natural sciences.

The theological orientation of the academy, founded by leaders of the Free Methodist Church, is informed by Wesleyan-Arminian teaching, which calls for wholeness in personal, church and civic life. Students are pointed to faith in Christ as the foundation for lives of commitment and service to which the academy aspires for each student.

Oakdale’s Mission:

Our mission is to change lives by providing a challenging educational program and a Christ-centered community for teenagers from a broad spectrum of experiences, leading them to lives of learning, serving others, and loving God.

One of our projects this year is to help the school with the addition of several rooms to the boys’ dormitory and remodeling the existing rooms as well.

We are off to work even though it is in the 80’s and 90’s each day. The new addition is well under way and part of our job will be adding some inner walls to accommodate the plumbing and for fire protection.

We were also asked to raise a small building so it could be treated for termites. Using some jacks and cement blocks we were able to raise it about 16 inches from the ground.

These guys look tough but look at the jack they used.

Once the building was raised some of the guys built a ramp so you could get in and out of the building with a dolly.

While we were here the summer students arrived on campus giving us a chance to meet some of them as we moved around campus and shared meals together.

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 22:6:  “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

This is the hope of all of the parents and faculty for the children here at Oakdale.
