Chile, 2015, Part Three

June 9, 2015

Another day dawns here in Chile with the beautiful sunrise and a great view of the Pacific ocean. Every day we get to take a bus ride along the coast and see the ships and cruse liners docked in the bay. The surrounding city with its buildings hugging the side of the mountains as far as the eye can see.

The bus ultimately leads us back to the work site to continue the mission at hand, which is adding rooms onto the “Look of Love” school. This school ministers to some of the mentally challenged people of the city. Today the building of the walls of the school continue.

We also find out today that all of the wood must be treated with a creosote to protect it from insects. This is a black gooey paint like material that seems to get on everything and everyone who comes near. It takes several hours to dry so anyone touching is instantly turned black.

Today will be a special day for the team. We are invited to join the students of the “Look of Love” school for a Kayaking lesson down at the bay of the Pacific Ocean. Part of the goal of the school is to help the students participate in some of the activities that others are able to do. There is a professional instructor and some boats to accompany the students and insure their safety. The first step is to meet the students and their mothers on a pier in the bay.

After the introductions are finished, the students went on a walkway down to the ocean where they were helped to board Kayaks by the instructor. At least one student who had qualified in kayaking was in each two-person kayak. Some of the team members were able to ride in the rubber boat that accompanied the students out into the bay.

The students get to learn some skills and enjoy the sights of the sea. Many times they are left out of some activities that others enjoy. This gives them the opportunity to get out of the house and enjoy these activities. To see the smiles,  and the enjoyment the students get from these activities as well as the joy the parents receive from seeing the happy faces of their children, warms our hearts and makes us grateful to be a small part of this ministry. This ministry is a reminder of what Matthew says in Chapter 25:40New International Version (NIV)  ….. ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

God’s wonders are all around us, we just need to open our eyes to see them.

I have heard other visitors of Chile say the people there are wonderful and peaceful people. Is that what you experienced too?

WE found it to be that way. Everyone was friendly, considerate and welcoming. Couldn’t have been nicer.
