Chile, 2015, Part Two

April 27, 2015

With all of the team now here in Chile we can work on building walls for the new addition of the “Look of Love” school. The goal is to add a storage room, an office for the social worker who will evaluate the students and an office for the pastor. The store-room will allow all of the material for the students and teachers to be stored out of the school room making room for more students. Another part of the project is to help build an additional rest room outside the church so students and teachers will not have to go into the church to use the facilities.
Because it is summer break for the students we can work without disturbing the classes. We will get an opportunity to meet most of them later in the week.

So after a great breakfast at the Hostel we board the bus to take us to the work site. The first order of business after arriving is to have a time of devotions  with the team and members of the school and church that are there to help on the project. Each morning a different member of the team is asked to share a bit of scripture or their “story” with the group. This is always a reminder of the Lord’s presence and allows us to see how God is working in the  other team members’  lives.

In order to enclose the new restroom one of the block walls on the outside of the church needs to be increased to a new height. Several of the local church members took on that task while one of the team members helped with some of the plumbing needed for water to be run to the room.

Some of the team continued to work on painting in the church while most of the team worked on building walls for the new rooms on the school. As the walls are built it takes a team effort to put them in place! The back wall of the building needed to be built in sections, due to its height, and then lifted in place by the team.

In the meantime painting continued on the mothers’ meeting room in the upstairs of the church.

Three of the ladies on the team were dedicated to keeping the team fed. They shopped for the food and prepared both the noon meal as well as the evening meal for the whole team. In order to get to the store they had to go to the bottom of the mountain where there was a grocery store. The easiest way to get there was to walk about a city block and ride the tram down the mountain side. It cost 100 Paso’s which is about 16 cents in U.S dollars.

We all returned to the Hostel tired but with a feeling of satisfaction about the work that had been accomplished by the end of the day. We are reminded of the words from John 9:4 where Jesus reminds us  “As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me.” If we are truly to be the hands and feet of Jesus this should also be our goal in life.
