Chile, 2015, The Begining

April 22, 2015

We are off again to follow God’s calling. We will be meeting other members of the team from the Chicago Heights Church of the Nazarene in Dallas, Texas,  and then flying to Santiago, Chile. When we arrive in Dallas,  we find the Team members from Chicago were unable to fly due to the weather conditions and the flight’s cancellation. There were five of us that had made it to Dallas so we boarded the airplane to Chile and arrived the next morning.

We were met by several of the people from the Valparaiso Church of the Nazarene. We boarded a bus and were off to Vina del Mar where we will be staying in a Hostel for the duration of the trip. After a quick lunch of rice and beans, we continued on to the church where we had an opportunity to tour the Church and the school, “Look of Love”, where we will be helping to add some rooms to expand the school.

The “Look of Love” school is the dream of Pastor Rene Noe’s wife, Lorena. With the support of the church and a 2013 Work and Witness team, they were able to build a one room school to serve people of the area that are mentally challenged. They currently have 25 students and hope to be able to expand to 50 in the future. Our project is to add three rooms, and a bathroom and update some of the current facilities.

We then returned to the hostel for a good night’s sleep. The next day we were picked up and bused to the job site. The five of us will start work this morning with help from some of the local church members and parents of the students. One of the first tasks is to remove the overhang where the new rooms will be added. The floor and foundation have already been completed by people from the Valparaiso Church.

The other project we were asked to work on was updating a room above the church. This room will be used as a meeting place for the parents of the students. Many of the parents spend time at the school while the students are there. This room gives them a chance to meet together and discuss how each of them copes with the needs of their children as well as a respite from the daily care.  The leader of this “support group” also uses this time to share the love of Jesus with them.

Before the afternoon is over the rest of the team arrives from Chicago. After some introductions the pastor shares with us a verse from Zephaniah 3:17  “The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” The team then starts construction of one of the walls for the new rooms for the school.

After some dinner prepared by the local church members it was back to the Hostel for another night’s rest. For us the dinner was a little unusual. We are not used to having avocado on our hot dogs but all enjoyed and thanked the Lord for another great day.
