Oklahoma City, 2013, Part Three

October 21, 2013

This morning after devotions we had breakfast at the Harvest Church cafeteria. Lots to eat, eggs, sausage, biscuits & gravy, fruit, milk and juice. A good way to start the day as we are off to work again.

This morning we are invited to visit the Crutcho school where both Dwana our host from the Free Methodist Church and Judy the owner of the house in Norman teach.

After our visit to the school we dropped some of the team off at the house to build the wall separating the bedroom from the laundry, stain the fence and finish the rock and seashell garden.

I went with the rest of the team to the house in Norman where we started the work on the water damage and took a look at Dorothy’s house where some repairs were needed. We were given a tour of their storm shelter where they go when there is a tornado warning. Living in an area where they have over 200 tornadoes in a year this provides a safe haven for both Dorothy and Judy during her storm.

First project was to take the siding off the front of Judy’s house and try to use it to replace damaged siding on other parts of the house. The font of the house will be re-sided with vinyl siding.

Some of the team then worked on the water damage in the bedroom. We had to remove the drywall and some of the rotted boards then rebuild the wall under the window. It was also necessary to remove some of the siding and window trim on the outside of the window.

Other team members spent some time with Dorothy and worked on her house. This included mowing the lawn, spraying for wasps and assessing the needs for some repairs and updates. Repairing or replacing some thresholds, building a step from the laundry room to the kitchen and replacing an old screen door.

At the end of the day we stopped back at the first to see the progress before we headed back to the Harvest Church for supper.

The great part about participating in a team like this is you never know what to expect so we all rely on Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
