Zambia, Part Ten (The End)

July 17, 2012

We are back in Lusaka for out last night but we have one more stop tomorrow before we leave for home. One of the projects of the Nazarene Church in Africa is to help with the problem of the many children that are orphaned or have single parents that need to work to earn a living and have nowhere to leave their children when they are away. although the children attend school up to the sixth grade (about age 11 or 12) They can only attend if they can afford to pay for the books and uniforms needed to attend. As a result many of the children do not attend school.

The ones that do attend school in Lusaka go on a two shift basis, where some go in the morning and others go in the afternoon. This leaves many children free to roam the street unsupervised. The Church is building Child Development Centers in many of the inner city locations to provide a place for the children to go when they are left alone during the day. We had an opportunity to visit one of these on the morning of our departure from Zambia.

The center gives the children a place to go during the day when their parents are at work and they are not in school. The center provides games and bible story’s for the children as well as one hot meal a day for each child. The children learn group activities that are healthy and have a place to get off the street. We were able to meet about a hundred of the children on the morning we visited.

Each of the children were given an animal hat to wear and we were treated with songs and dances by the children. In turn we were asked to sing some songs which we were happy to do. This was a fitting end to our adventure to see the happy faces of the children in Lusaka. One of the tasks of the church is to fulfill the message in Luke 16-17:  “But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” NIV.
